Jazz Arts: Voice
Sweet, sultry, poignant – all words that have been used to describe Jean Baylor’s arresting voice. Jean Baylor has generations of musical influence that she has carefully crafted into her own distinct vocal stylings. Growing up singing everything from church hymns to R&B/Hip-Hop, it was natural that Jean chose to major in Jazz Vocal Performance while attending Temple University. Upon graduating, she made her mark as one-half of the Motown Records platinum-selling duo, “Zhane´”, influencing a generation of music listeners into a new genre, Neo-Soul. Jean continued to expand her talents as a songwriter, arranger and producer. Teaming up with her husband, drummer and producer, Marcus Baylor, they formed The Baylor Project, an enticingly innovative approach to jazz encompassing their combined influences of gospel, blues and soul, all while bridging the gap between generations. Their debut album “The Journey”, released on their own independent label, Be A Light, garnered 2 GRAMMY® Nominations for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Traditional R&B Performance, solidifying The Baylor Project as an undeniable force. Jean enjoys music now as much as she did singing in the Angel Choir at Second Baptist Church as a child. Jean is extremely passionate about using her God-given talents and abilities to create her future, fulfill her purpose and ultimately help others to do the same.
